The Perfect Pastor




Read this today, agree 100% with it.

We ask you, brothers, to respect those who labor among you and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, and to esteem them very highly in love because of their work. 

"Phil Hines tells a humourous imaginary story about Jesus walking along the road one day and seeing a man crying. When He asked what was wrong, the man replied, "I'm blind," so Jesus healed him. Further along He met another man in tears and asked him the same question. He replied, "I'm lame," so Jesus healed him. Then He encountered a third man weeping. In response to Jesus' question he replied, "I'm a pastor." So Jesus sat down and wept right along with him! Pastoring can be a thankless job; that's why the Bible says, "Hold them in highest regard."

Somebody has described the "Perfect Pastor" as one who preaches 20 minutes and sits down. He condemns sin without offending anybody, works 16-hour days doing everything from preaching to sweeping, makes $400 a week and gives $200 back to the church, wears nice clothes, has a model family, supports good causes and helps beggars who stop by the church. He's 36 and he's been preaching for 40 years. He has a burning desire to work with the youth, and spends all his time with the senior citizens. He smiles all the time while keeping a straight face, because he has a keen sense of humour that finds him seriously dedicated. He makes 20 visits a day, spends every waking moment evangelising, and is always in his office in case he's needed. The bad news is, he burned out and died at 37!

Paul writes, "Appreciate...pastoral leaders who gave you the Word" (Heb 13:7 TM). "Honour those...who work so hard for you, who have...the responsibility of...guiding you...Overwhelm them with appreciation and love!" (1 Thes 5:12-13 TM). In other words, support your pastor!"

Springing up

Sprite has an advertising slogan that reads ‘Obey your thirst’.  Everyone knows what it is like to thirst, and we all know that there is nothing like a cool refreshing drink to take away our thirst.   Just as we can thirst physically, we can also thirst spiritually.  We can look to many sources to try and quench this thirst but soon we find like the hymn writer said,  I tried the broken cisterns, Lord, But, ah, the waters failed; Even as I stooped to drink they fled, And mocked me as I wailed. Now none but Christ can satisfy, None other Name for me! There’s love, and life, and lasting joy, Lord Jesus, found in Thee. Square peg, Round hole

Jesus' life-giving presence is not just for you, before you, around you - it is in you. One of the first lessons you learn in life at nursery school is that square pegs don't go in round holes. You can try, but no matter how many times you beat or force it, it just won't go. It is beyond the realms of all possible because it wasn't designed to go there. Sometimes life can be like this. Trying to force something that won't go, or you can feel like you are zagging when you should zigging, and no matter how many times you try - nothing fits. Square peg, round hole. Again and again.
